Bridgwater College has developed a comprehensive construction skills training offer that will equip businesses and their workforce with the unique skills, behaviours and competencies required to enable them to benefit from the major projects coming to Somerset in the next few years.
At the College practical work is supported by theory classes of underpinning knowledge, giving an all-round learning experience. Skills qualifications are now mandatory for most construction jobs and our courses will prepare you for the world of work and demonstrate a formal level of competence in any skills you may already have acquired within the industry.
There are progression routes in all sectors with a positive attitude towards achievement and Apprenticeships. The retention rates and achievement rates within the Construction Sectors are excellent with strong links with industry and employers both in the local community and beyond.
The College's specialist Construction Training Centre in Wylds Road, Bridgwater, opened in May 2011 and provides instruction not only in the main trades of brickwork, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and plastering but also in scaffolding and all forms of lifting operations. With 4000 square metres of flexible training space, two gantry cranes and a series of purpose-built plumbing and electrical bays, the Centre is superbly equipped to meet the training needs of local construction-based businesses. There is also a computer suite from which clients can access the online CSCS Health and Safety Test, and of course the Centre will be offering Client/Contractor National Safety Group (CCNSG) training as a pre-requisite for anyone wishing to work on the proposed nuclear new-build.
The College’s commitment to construction training doesn’t stop there. The College recently opened for business at its brand new Construction Skills and Innovation Centre in Cannington where all forms of groundwork, concrete pouring, construction plant and lifting operations will be taught.
Overall, the significant investment that the College is making in the delivery of relevant, practical, transferable skills is designed to ensure that local people can access the training they need in order to benefit from the significant investment that is coming to the region.
