Subject Information

A career in horticulture has something to offer everyone, whatever their academic ability as the work can be technical and creative, using personal skills or the very latest technology.

Bridgwater & Taunton College has courses to meet all your needs, whether full or part-time, and outstanding facilities such as The Walled Garden of Cannington or the latest environmentally controlled greenhouses. Did you know that there are over 18 million gardeners in the UK spending over £2 billion?

Our Cannington Centre has a renowned reputation for the training of horticulture students and much investment has been placed in the facilities for the subject. The Walled Gardens of Cannington are in the grounds of the former priory and are open to the public, having been officially launched by HRH Prince Edward in April 2009. With a botanical glasshouse, plant shop, tea rooms and extensive gardens, it makes an outstanding facility for horticulture students, as well as a great visitor attraction.

What our students say

Horticulture, Gardening & Landscape Design Student Nigel Cox

Nigel Cox

I am delighted that Higher Education provision in horticulture has once more returned to Cannington. Not only have I taught horticulture here for nine years, but I am also a product of the College’s horticulture training having gained an HE qualification in Landscape and Garden Design prior to starting to teach here. I am also deeply involved in the industry outside of College which gives me an insight into just how these higher level skills are needed. This course will provide you with a combination of academic and practical skills at the high levels required in our industry.”

Nigel is the course Leader for HND Horticulture at Bridgwater College.
