Subject Information

Bridgwater & Taunton College is the pioneer of the Forest School concept in the UK. In 1993, a team from Bridgwater & Taunton College visited Denmark on an exchange visit and were inspired by the encouragement the Danish schools give to outdoor activities. On their return to Somerset, they set up the Forest School—the first of its kind in the UK—which has now become widely accepted across the country as a valuable mode of learning for all ages and client groups.

Bridgwater & Taunton College staff go out to other areas of the UK giving training to those interested in running or participating in Forest School provision to spread the good practice of the College's Forest School nationally and internationally. What our students say

Benjamin Jackson

The training exceeded my expectation by far. It was engaging at all times. Information was always relevant and interesting. The skills learnt have given me the confidence to lead Forest School groups in my setting. Andy and Hannah delivered the training beautifully. Their calm and competent approach made me feel at ease immediately. They created a supportive environment encouraging cohesion between candidates. I always felt comfortable to attempt new challenges and to do things that I’ve shied away from in the past. The course has enriched my life and work far beyond the scope of Forest School.”

Benjamin is currently a higher level teaching assistant for physical and medical needs at Bradley Stoke Community School, South Gloucester.
