Award for Nuclear Industry Awareness
Who is the course for?
The Award is designed to provide Apprentices, Graduates and all other non-nuclear sector personnel who are transferring into the nuclear sector, with a foundation level of understanding of the nuclear industry and its specific requirements, into which they will be starting their employment or have joined in recent years. The Award will also benefit those in the industry who wish to have a broader awareness and wish to gain recognition of their knowledge of the Nuclear Sector.
What will I study on the course?
The qualification comprises three compulsory units as detailed below:
Unit ANIA 1
History, Site Licence, Security, Behavioural Expectations and Stakeholders of the Nuclear Industry
An overview of the history and general description of the nuclear industry, security within nuclear sites, the UK nuclear stakeholders and behavioural expectations of employees.
Unit ANIA 2
Fundamentals of Nuclear Physics, Radiation Hazards, Detection, Safety Culture, Emergency Procedures, Control of Contamination in the Nuclear Industry
A foundation in the scientific concepts and principles associated with atomic structure, radioactivity, ionising radiation, the detection of ionising radiation and its hazards. General emergency procedures within the nuclear industry, safety legislation and safety culture will be discussed.
Unit ANIA 3
Electricity generation, defence, fuel cycle, waste management, environment, decommissioning, emergency procedures for the Nuclear Industry
A foundation in the construction, functioning and decommissioning of nuclear reactors used by the defence industry and electricity generating industries. The management of the waste generated by the nuclear fuel cycle is also considered along with emergency procedures
What other skills will I acquire?
During the teaching and assessment of other related nuclear courses, we have noticed a significant improvement in our candidate's study skills, numeracy and communication skills and for some, their presentation and IT skills.
What will I need for the course?
Generally there is no prescribed recommended prior knowledge, attainment or experience required.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on the basic theory and knowledge in a number of ways including multiple choice tests, discussion and interview. Candidates will need to sit an examination of approximately up to 2 hours to achieve the qualification.
How long is the course?
A total of 70 guided learning hours.
The course is delivered modularly and consists of a classroom-based course comprising 6 days in total delivered 1 day per week over a period of time to allow learner internal consolidation of the concepts and teaching material. Learners would be supported by use of our Virtual Learning Environment which would enable them access to additional learning material.Learners will need to submit regular assessments on-line for feedback and to monitor their progress.
Will this course lead to a qualification?
Yes. The PAA/VQSET Award for Nuclear Industry Awareness. This Award is identified as an additional employer requirement for the Cogent Advanced Apprenticeship / Modern Apprenticeship in Nuclear Decommissioning framework. It is also intended for this Award to become a Technical Certificate for the proposed Cogent Nuclear Working Apprenticeship framework. Evidence generated may be used for other qualifications in the Nuclear Sector.
What can I do on completion of this course?
You can progress to other courses at Bridgwater College including the NVQ 3 in Radiation Safety, NVQ 3 in Nuclear Decommissioning or the Foundation Degree in Nuclear Decommissioning as appropriate.
