A Bridgwater College student has returned from touring with British rock band, The Stranglers, where he gained real life work experience in relation to his course.
Dave Sims, 17 from Bridgwater, who studies the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts, joined the band on a UK tour for a month with the sound, lighting, stage and event production company, APR Audio, who approached the College with the offer of valuable work experience for one of its capable students. Despite originally not getting a place on the tour itself, Dave was called up with just 12 hours’ notice to support the tour around England and Scotland.
From Aberdeen to Leamington Spa to Leeds, Dave started with the basics of the patch and stage set-up, and gradually progressed to mixing monitors independently for the support act, alternative rock band, The Godfathers. Dave was also given responsibility for ensuring that all the microphones and stands were set up in the precise places on the stage, and for packing the equipment away correctly at the end of the gig.
Dave, formerly of Haygrove School in Bridgwater said,
“Although there was a lot of pressure to get things set up and taken down as quickly as possible, I started to do things more logically, and became more organised and efficient. Some of the venues have had over 2500 capacity, whilst others were smaller at around 700, which gave me a great insight into how a tour works. Luckily food and drink were always on hand and we got two days off a week to recuperate! I was made really welcome which gave me a great first tour experience!”
