Students on the Sports Turf Apprenticeship programme at Bridgwater College have spent the past month working on the College's Pitch and Putt course in preparation for its opening at Easter.
The Cannington Pitch and Putt is a very popular attraction in the village, and at weekends and during the summer holidays it is full of families and beginners enjoying what is generally considered as one of the region's best short golf courses.
The work has included renovating the greens, feeding, weed spraying, all mowing of areas, bunker renovation and reshaping. This should results in a well presented golf course for the Spring, while the students have gained confidence and competence in practical skills and knowledge.
Programme Manager and Lecturer in Sports Turf, Will Bowden said,
“This is the ideal environment for young turf professionals to gain experience and confidence on the range of machines they will need to operate on a daily basis within their future workplaces. The fact that this is a commercial facility adds great motivation to the students, knowing that when Easter arrives their efforts will be enjoyed and appreciated by all who come to play this great little course.”
The course reopens on Good Friday 2 April with round of pitch and putt only £5.50 for adults, £3.50 for children under 14. The course is open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm. Visit www.canningtongolfcentre.co.uk for more information.
