Students support Cannington in Bloom team - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Students studying a Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture at Bridgwater & Taunton College have been supporting the wonderful work carried out by the Cannington in Bloom team.

As part of the practical learning element of their course the students replaced the planting in the baskets that adorn the railings of the Jubilee Gardens in Cannington. The colour scheme for this spring is yellow and blue, with the planters containing wallflower, primula, pansy, tulips, hyacinths and dwarf daffodil. The students hope that it will provide that ‘wow factor’ continuing the gold award winning work of Cannington in Bloom.

By participating in the project it gives the students real-life practical experience which will be invaluable for their future careers in horticulture. During the lesson students discussed and learnt about production of bedding plants and issues relating to sustainability in horticulture. The plants were raised at the Walled Gardens of Cannington using biodegradable pots and peat free compost.

Tom Cunningham, Course Leader, Agriculture, Food & Land Management said,

“The College has been on board with the Cannington in Bloom team for several years now and it has been fantastic to play a role, along with other groups, in helping with their success. It is a great opportunity for students to connect with the local community and gain experience in producing planters to a high standard that will be viewed by the public.”
