Engineering students head to Munich - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Four Engineering students from Bridgwater College have recently returned from a very successful Engineering Mobility in Europe (EMEU) project involving a Technical Manufacturing School in Munich.

The project is the first of its kind for the College’s Engineering department, the trip was the second phase of the project that has already seen students from Munich visit Bridgwater College.

Students from both countries were set the task to redesign a wing mirror of the Ariel Atom sports car. After successfully finalising a design for the wing mirror and producing a prototype of the design using a 3D printer, the students took their concept to Munich. Using their expertise and the latest technology, the group manufactured a mould for the wing mirror using Computer Aided Design and Manufacture software and a 5 axis CNC cutting machine. A carbon fibre mirror could then be produced from this mould.

As well as gaining valuable manufacturing skills, the students also experienced independent travelling, living and working away from home. The Munich School also provided the students with a programme of local visits that not only gave them an insight into German culture but also access to their world class engineering industry.

Chris Hunt, Curriculum Manager for Engineering at Bridgwater College said,

“This was a great opportunity for our students to be involved in as part of their study programmes. All of them returned with great memories and experiences which I’m sure will have a positive impact on their future careers.”

Student, Andrew Crew, who is studying the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering at Bridgwater College added,

“It was great to be chosen for this opportunity. Not only did we learn valuable skills and knowledge of modern CAD/CAM manufacturing but we also had a memorable time living in Munich for two weeks. It will be something that I will definitely remember about my time at Bridgwater College in years to come.”
