A Bridgwater College Electrical apprentice has recently won gold at the regional heats of the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year competition, which was held at Bridgwater College’s Riverside House.
Matt Doe, from Weston-Super-Mare, is studying a Level 3 Advanced Electrotechnical Apprenticeship at the College and was nominated for the competition by his College mentor Roger Rogers. Students from more than 60 College’s from around the country are competing in the regional heats throughout January and February, in the hope of progressing on to the grand final at Stephenson College in Leicestershire in March.
The winner of the national final will not only be crowned UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year, but will also walk away with electrical testing equipment worth more than £1,300 from leading manufacturer Megger. The winning College will also receive a package of electrical testers worth £1,000.
The 10 students who took part in the electrical competition were faced with a series of practical tasks to complete throughout the day. The standard of competition was extremely high, and judged under the watchful eye of Darren Oates from EAL, a specialist skills partner and awarding organisation for the industry.
Roger Rogers, Internal Verifier for Construction at Bridgwater College said,
“We are extremely proud of Matt’s achievement. He was the obvious choice to represent Bridgwater College in this competition. Matt’s employer, Mike Rogers of Rogers Restorations Ltd has employed a number of previous winners and understands the value of employing outstanding employees and the rewards it brings to his business. Matt has also been selected for the WorldSkills Squad UK along with Harvey Hemming and David Sparks of Bridgwater College, so this competition gave him the valuable experience he needs to hopefully represent the country in 2017.”
