Netball report: Team BC vs Truro & Penwith College - Bridgwater & Taunton College

In the only fixture playable due to weather and traffic, Team BC Netball faced Truro and Penwith (Penwith Campus) in their first match of 2016.

An unexpected long journey meant the team had a short warm up and had to get straight on court with little time to prepare. Due to this delay, it also meant that the game was going to be made up of 10 minute quarters.

The first quarter saw defensive pressure from Jessie Venning (WD) and Saskia Middleton (GK) to ensure that Penwith did not pull away, keeping the score line close. This pressure allowed Rheanne Lee (GD) to read the oppositions play, and gain countless interceptions. Aerin Phillips (GS) did well to hold her space against a tough defender and gave the attack a good option for each attacking play.

Going into the second half, changes to Team BC offered alternative options when bringing the ball down the court. Cerys Ethridge (WA) created some great movement while Sammy Kemmish (GA) held her space well in the circle to provide a safe option for her team and shot well to keep Team BC in the lead. However, Penwith continued to apply pressure and kept the score even.

Alisha Gardener (C) ensured she supported both the attack and the defence throughout the game, making it hard for Penwith to force errors and generate turnovers. Both Laura Gibson (WA) and Charlie Fouracres (WD) found space on the court to again, offer more options for the attack during the last few minutes when the game went goal for goal. However, tactical play by Team BC ensured that they kept possession in the last few seconds to ensure that they kept the lead until the final whistle. Team BC took the victory, winning 21 – 20.
