Richard Oates talks about his career journey with Bristol Airport - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Students studying Travel and Tourism at Bridgwater College welcomed Richard Oates, Training and Recruitment Officer for Swissport at Bristol Airport and heard about his career at Bristol Airport.

Richard began working for Bristol Airport in May 2001, during this time he worked as part of Easy Jet’s ground staff. In September of this year airports were rocked by events in New York City on September 11th. Richard spoke about how this tragic event changed the way airports operate and now security has never been the same since.

Richard went on to speak about his career and how he began his role as training and recruitment officer. Richard spoke to the Level 3 Year 2 Students about the aviation industry, giving them information about the airport, different training programmes available and different departments which would be recruiting in 2016.

Richards’s animated and dynamic delivery of his presentation kept the students switched on and engaged, he was extremely informative on career opportunities available at Bristol Airport and tips on what the students would need to do to secure a position with airlines.

Richard also told our students about his appearance on ITV television programme Airline, they loved hearing about the process of filming and how Richard felt about being captured on TV.

Geraldine Francis, Level 3 Year 2 Travel & Tourism student from Taunton said,

“It was great to meet Richard, he spoke enthusiastically about his job role and it really came across how passionate he is about the work he does and company he works for. His presentation was motivating and extremely enjoyable.”
