After a bruising fixture against Colegy Cymoedd in Team BC’s last appearance, another tough fixture arrived in the form of the Natwest Cup, as BC faced King’s College, Taunton in the second round at College Way Wednesday afternoon.

King’s started the game at a ferocious pace which caught Team BC standing in the blocks, only to be let off by opponent’s mistakes in the Bridgwater twenty two. King’s had the first chance for a try in the fifth minute, as a long troubling kick wasn’t met with the decisive touch. King’s enjoyed a long spell with possession and eventually earned a scrum on the five metre line in tenth minute when the first try of the game arrived. King’s distributed the ball across field very swiftly from the scum to dive past the BC defence.

The game would only get tougher for Team BC when Ethan Lawson was sent to the bin by the referee for being judged to have deliberately knocked the ball on. King’s then proceeded to score three carbon copy tries in the corner. The game then became balanced as Team BC utilised their power in the scrums and a tidy line out from Carl Guest, Team BC were able to force a maul into the kings 22 only to give away the penalty.

Team BC continued to pressure in the second half and won a penalty, kicking to the corner in the tenth minute of the half. After another well worked line out and maul, Bridgwater were able force themselves over the line in a well worked try by Chris Clavey, which was converted by Ben Freeman.

Team BC used this advantage over their opponents and tried to reduce the deficit. King’s fitness and composure started to show and they scored two more tries before the full time whistle, the final score 7 – 37 in the Taunton side’s favour.

After the game Team BC Head Coach Roy Davies said,

“King’s are a well drilled side and clearly look like they’ve been playing together for a long time, with a lot of talent in there too. We were too slow out of the blocks in the first half, it took us a while to get into it and they punished us for that. In the second half we were much better and managed to get back in the game and we scored a great try.

“Ultimately we just weren’t accurate enough. We had a lot of young boys with our backline in particular who haven’t played together before in the side today whereas they will have had many of their older sixth form students in there who have probably been playing together since their early years of school, it’s now just the case of going back to training and making sure that we spend some quality time on the field so they boys get to understand each other better and our patterns better.”

Next week Team BC Elite Rugby are back in league action away at Hartpury College (21 October).
