Men's football report: Team BC Development vs Weston College 2nds - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Team BC Development side faced a strengthened Weston second team in their first game of the season. In what was a fast start to the game both teams settled quickly after early chances were exchanged without success.

The home side had the first chance of the game with Ross Coleman being played through to the right hand edge of the 18 yard box, only to put his shot at the keeper. Weston also had a chance in a similar position but dragged the shot wide.

It would be the visitors who took the lead after initially having a penalty turned down, Team BC failed to clear their lines and Weston clipped a sharp cross into the box which was met and headed past keeper Ashton Granter.

Team BC remained under pressure, their back four of Sammy Fletcher, Elliott Calvert, Morgan Adams and Alex Lancaster having to cope with much of the action pegged in the BC half, with little going up field. Weston were then able to extend their lead after Team BC again failed to clear the ball from Weston corner and was met with a fine volley into the goal from the edge of the 18 yard box.

The game seemed to settle as Team BC found their rhythm and were attacking the Weston goal, with Ross Coleman testing the Weston back four. Pressure from Team BC was soon to be rewarded after intricate play from the BC midfield and good footwork from Matt Elford skipping past two tackles before seeing his shot from 25 yards into the back of the net after the Weston keeper failed to capture the ball.

Team BC trailed 2 – 1 going into half time, but shortly after the break Weston extended their lead with a neat finish from the edge of the box. Goalkeeper Ashton Granter was called upon frequently to keep the home side within touching distance.

Team BC remained in the game with a gritty second half performance. Team BC had their chances to level with Weston, with a great chance falling to Dan Male who was denied by some top quality goalkeeping. However Bridgwater's efforts prevailed as they closed the gap with a superb finish from Bailey Atkinson rolling the ball past the keeper, who was played in on goal with a slick pass from Tom Cowd.

A potential comeback looked to be on the cards as BC carved pressure on Weston. However they paid the price for not taking their chances, unable to score that equalising goal conceding a penalty in the dying seconds of the game. Weston took the invitation to secure the three points converting the resulting spot kick, to make the final score 4 – 2 in the visitors favour.

It was a frustrating match for coaches Gareth Lewis and Paul Bennett as Weston were given too many gifted chances, but there were many positives to take going forward. Team BC will take these positives going into next week’s fixture at home to Cabots on Wednesday 30 September.
