Another year of fantastic results - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Bridgwater College is once again celebrating the amazing A Level results their students have achieved, securing a fantastic pass rate of 99.4% compared to the national average of 98.1%.

Nationally it has been identified there has been a decline in high grades, not in Bridgwater College’s case! Their top 20 students between them have achieved 42 A* – A grades, which is a percentage increase on their 2014 results. The College has also seen over 40% of their A Level and International Baccalaureate students achieve A* – B grades in their exams.

Mike Robbins, Principal at Bridgwater College said,

“We are delighted with our students’ results and are incredibly proud of their achievements. Congratulations must go to the students, their families who supported them and our staff who have worked extremely hard to ensure students have done so well.”

From 652 entries, Bridgwater College only saw four fails which is a great accolade for the College and one of the best in the South West. There was a great atmosphere at the College on Thursday morning when students and families came in to pick up their results.

Josh Harris of Ilminster and former student of Holyrood Academy, received fantastic grades and will be progressing to Southampton University next month to study Computer Science. Josh achieved an A* in Maths and two A's in Computing and Physics and said,

“I really happy as I didn’t expect an A*.”

We asked Josh’s mum how she was feeling and she said,

“I am absolutely ecstatic for Josh.”

Megan Trick of Taunton and former Castle School student, scooped an A* Accounting and an A in both Maths and Sociology. Alongside her A Levels Megan also studied AAT Accounting, which has helped her to secure an Apprenticeship at Albert Goldman Accounts. Megan said,

“I am over the moon and feeling really happy, all my hard work has paid off.”

Hero Suffield of Taunton, has secured her place to study Social Work at The University of Bath. Hero was awarded an A* in Sociology, an A in A Level Religious Studies and an A in AS Archaeology. Hero said,

“I wasn’t the most engaged student while at school, but I wanted to prove to myself and everyone else that I could do well and believe that today I can say I did.”

Anna Watson student from Bridgwater, secured her place to student a Foundation Diploma at Bridgwater College in Art, Design and Media by achieving an A* in Graphics and a B in both French and English. Anna said,

“I’m feeling really good about my results and extra pleased, as I passed my driving test yesterday.”

Other student achievements include:

  • Matthew Wiliams previously of Priory Community School achieved one A* and two A’s and is progressing to Bristol University to study Maths
  • Ryan Bennett formerly of Haygrove School achieved three A’s and one C and is going to study International Relations and Political Science at the University of Birmingham
  • Laura Hemmings previously of Crispin School in Street achieved two A*’s an A and B plans to read Biological Studies at Exeter University
  • Zoe Gathercole of Bridgwater Academy achieved two A*s and two A’s and is planning to study Software Engineering at the University of Southampton
  • Ruby Barrett who previously studied at King Alfred’s School in Burnham gained three A’s and is studying Geography at Exeter
  • Morgan Downing formerly of Westhaven School achieved an A*, A and two B’s and is going on to study Maths and Physics at Warwick University
  • Jake Rutherford previously of Crispin School is going to study Mechanical Engineering at Nottingham University as a result of securing an A* and two B grades
  • Oliver Cummings previously of Haygrove School is going to study Architecture at Oxford Brookes after achieving an A*, A, C and a D grade
  • Hayley Holman previously of St Dunstans Community School achieved two A’s and a C and is going to study Ballet Education at the Royal Academy of Dance.

Students studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) have also produced excellent grades this year. The average score being 31 out of 45, well in excess of the global average 29.9 points, with 61% achieving high grades, equivalent to A* to B at A level. The average individual point score per subject, of the six subjects that IB students take was grade 5 equivalent to B at A Level. The students are progressing to a range of universities, careers and gap years, including universities such as Birmingham, Nottingham and Sussex, as well as progressing within Bridgwater College.

Martyn Aldridge International Baccalaureate Coordinator said,

”We are so impressed with our IB results this year; the students worked amazingly hard to achieve these grades and overcame many challenges along the way. They have matured and grown greatly as a group of young adults, inspired and challenged by the demands of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. They are very much ready for the next step in life whether it be university, careers or gap year activities.”

  • Liberty Pring of Bridgwater and former student of Robert Blake Science College is going to study History at Birmingham University after achieving a fantastic 38 points.
  • Hannah Puplett of North Petherton and also of Robert Blake Science College achieved 31 points and is going to study Psychology at Plymouth University.
  • Becky Ashley of Street and former Crispin School student, achieved 28 points and has a place to study Nursing at Oxford Brookes; she will be a third generation nurse.
  • Lucille White of Street and former student of Crispin School secured 30 points and is going on to study French and Film at the University of East Anglia or Bangor University.

Louise Rowley, Assistant Principal for A Level, Professional & Foundation Studies said,

“I am very pleased and proud of the results achieved by our students this year and congratulate each and every one on their achievements. The results are a combination of the hard work and dedication of our students and the dynamic and inspirational teaching our staff provide. I am very much looking forward to welcoming our new cohort of students who are joining us in September.”
