Students provide fuel for the Paris cycle - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Entry Level students at Bridgwater College provided the Level 3 CYQ and Development, Coaching and Fitness students with much needed fuel for their 280 mile charity bike ride from London to Paris in early May to raise money for Help for Heroes and In Charley’s Memory.

Back row: James Piper, Andrew Howe, Shane Bail, Clayton Payne, Alex Male; Middle row: Liam Vickery, Corrine Redman, Millie Beck, Sharon Knight (Catering Tutor), Kyle Gibbs-Hartley; Front row: Andre Martins, Joe Clarke, Victoria Winter, Katie Gadd, Gavin Miller, Melissa Storey, Will Astill, Josh Smith.

The students, who are studying cooking skills as part of their Learning for Life and Work course, prepared a range of snacks including brownies, butter shortbread and flapjacks to keep the students’ energy levels up during the gruelling challenge. The foods could be broken down quickly and efficiently to provide the glucose needed for the riders to keep going on the bike, essential for any long-distance cycle challenge.

Kevin Smokcum, Advanced Practitioner for Catering at the College said,

“It’s a great opportunity for our Learning for Life and Work students to be able to cook performance foods for the team challenge to Paris, and an outstanding example of inclusive practice within the College.”

Will Astill, who is studying the Level 3 in Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness at the College said,

“The food looked amazing.  We are really thankful for the time and effort the group put in to produce it for us all, it really did help.”
