Staff at Bridgwater College are celebrating the long-awaited commencement of works to build a new Performing Arts Centre for Bridgwater at the College’s Bath Road site.
The project, approved in 2011, will see the construction of a multi-purpose 350-seat auditorium, which will be used as a theatre, conference facility and exhibition space by the College and the local community alike, with completion expected by Easter 2015.
Representatives from the College, building contractors BAM and Sedgemoor District Council attended a ‘ground-breaking’ ceremony at the site to mark the commencement of the works. College Principal, Mike Robbins took the opportunity to thank all the people involved in the project, saying;
“We are immensely excited that this project – which has been years in the planning – is finally underway. Ground conditions and budget have necessitated significant re-engineering works, resulting in unforeseen delays, but we can now look forward to a time when our Performing and Production Arts students will receive their training in facilities that are second to none in the local area. The Centre will also be opened up to touring companies and professional groups, so that people within our community will also derive huge benefit. I would like to thank all those who have been involved with the project thus far.”
Peter Downing, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council said,
“We are so pleased to be part of this ambitious project, which is something not seen before in Sedgemoor. The Centre will be excellent, not only for the College but for the community as a whole.”
