Working with Employers to provide professional workforce training
Engineering training for industry is being delivered through a joint training programme delivered by Alstom and Bridgwater & Taunton College.
The combined expertise and capacity of the College and Alstom offer a powerful combination that enables employers to address their up-skilling and training needs at a time and place that suits them, secure in the knowledge that they are working with some of the top names in the industry.
Somerset County Cricket Club
In early 2014, Bridgwater College became an official education partner of Somerset County Cricket Club. This innovative partnership offers local people the opportunity to attend events and promotional days at the County Ground, but also focuses on education and learning opportunities; for example, Bridgwater College runs its pre-employment programmes at the County Ground, enabling candidates to gain sports specific qualifications and skills, whilst also gaining real life work experience by volunteering in various roles at SCCC events.
Luxury leather goods company Mulberry were facing challenges in recruiting suitably skilled new recruits—with no apprenticeship scheme existing to cover their specific needs—so the firm turned to outside training providers for help.
A new and innovative training partnership was brokered between Bridgwater College and Mulberry by the Sector Skills Council for fashion and textiles, Skillfast-UK. This partnership allows Mulberry to train their apprentices in the workplace using the company's own expert employees, materials, equipment and techniques that employees utilise every day.
In 2006 Magnox found themselves with a fleet of plants scheduled for shutdown and requiring dismantling. Although their workforces were highly skilled nuclear plant operators, they needed to re-skill in front-line decontamination and dismantling skills. Magnox approached Bridgwater College for help.
College staff worked hard with Magnox to design a training programme that would provide the training the company’s employees needed.
