Who is the course for?

  • Students that wish to progress onto higher levels in beauty therapy or work in the beauty industry

What does the course involve?

Twelve units, including theoretical knowledge and practical understanding. These include:

  • Working in the beauty industry
  • Follow health and safety in the salon
  • Client care and communication
  • Promote products and services
  • Provide facial skincare
  • Remove hair using waxing techniques
  • Provide manicure treatments
  • Provide pedicure treatments
  • Provide eyelash and brow treatments
  • Apply make-up
  • Salon reception duties
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty industry 

Units are taught in class contact sessions including lectures, tutorials and workshops.

Placements/Work Placements

Work placements in a salon offer a fantastic opportunity to gain external experience of industry. A week of work experience is an expectation of the programme. You will also benefit from our salon environment provides a realistic working environment for our students to work and to progress into industry. Contacts with local salons and spas enable students to have job opportunities as soon as they are available.

Entry Requirements

Under 19

  • A minimum of five GCSEs in the A* – E or 9 - 3 range, with Ds in English and Science, or an appropriate Level 1 qualification
  • A successful interview is also required

What are the assessment methods?

  • Unitised online examinations
  • Practical assessments
  • Written coursework
  • Presentations

These assessments take place throughout the year, assessment calendars are given to students to enable planning for theses assessments.

How long is the course?

One year, full-time.

What are the College attendance requirements?

15 hours per week, with an expectation of up to six hours per week of self-study.

Are there any additional costs for the course?

  • Course materials, tunic and text book are approximately £300
  • Trip £75 (compulsory)
  • Additional training /trips (various/optional)

What are the progression options?

Level 3 VRQ beauty therapies techniques or complementary therapies course, business course or short courses.

Learners may wish to work in the industry such as beauty salons or spas, self-employed or mobile work.


Past students have worked in Cedar Falls, Rookery Manor, Bridgwater College, Cadbury Spa and many have set up their own mobile businesses.
