Course Information

Who is the course for?

This course is offered to individuals already working or wishing to work in the fitness industry, who would like to study through work-based learning.

There are no pre-defined entry routes, however learners wishing to progress into this Apprenticeship programme will require a minimum Level 1 in Maths & English. The programme places great emphasis on practical ability, backed up with an understanding of the principals involved. The Apprenticeship offers high quality training, to meet the Sports & Leisure industry standards. The qualification was designed for employers and ensures that the training received will equip candidates with the skills needed by the industry.

What does the course involve?

Students will receive practical training designed to develop knowledge and competence at carrying out relevant real-life tasks that employers will value. 

The course is divided three sections: 

  • YMCA Level 2 Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning
  • YMCA Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing
  • YMCA Level 2 Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness

Course content will be tailored to the needs of the individual and will include:     

  • Employment rights and responsibilities
  • Anatomy and Physiology for exercise
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Planning and Instructing gym based exercise

Entry Requirements

GCSEs in the A*– E or 9 - 3 range.

What are the assessment methods?

  • Multiple choice exams
  • Workbooklets
  • Practical assessments
  • Portfolio of evidence

Students will be visited regularly by a qualified Assessor to check progression and ensure that they are building evidence towards their final qualification.

How long is the course?

Up to 12 months, although students can fast track if they have met the performance criteria earlier.

What are the College attendance requirements?

Students can visit the College one day per week to work towards gaining detailed underpinning knowledge of the chosen subject or use the online programme to complete units.

What are the progression options?

Successful completion of the course could lead to employment opportunities within the industry or progress to Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship). Candidates may progress to study a Foundation Degree at Level 4 and 5 within Sports Coaching, Health, Fitness & Exercise, Sports Development, Sports Science and Leisure Management Level 4 and 5.
