Who is the course for?

This Apprenticeship is for anyone looking to start or develop their career in civil engineering. This Level 3 Advanced Technical Apprenticeship is an excellent opportunity to gain internationally recognised qualifications whilst gaining work experience in the industry. The course not only serves those working in full time employment within the industry, it is also a proven progression route to Higher Education. This may be a part time degree programmes at University or continuation at Bridgwater and Taunton College studying the Higher National Certificate.

What does the course involve?

The Apprenticeship framework will consist of the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) and the Institution of Civil Engineers’ NVQ Diploma in Civil Engineering for Technicians.

The BTEC element is covered within a day-release College programme, whilst the NVQ is competency based and linked to the workplace.

Units covered will include:

  • Construction Technology
  • Construction Principles.

Bridgwater & Taunton College is extremely proud and excited to be delivering the day release element at the Frenchay campus of the University West of England. This gives candidates access to excellent university learning resources and facilities. 

The course helps to develop a broad understanding of the whole construction industry and uses realistic scenarios to help the students apply this knowledge.  Most of the learners will progress onto university or further study within the college and continue their employment. The learners will develop report writing and presentation skills during the course which will help them to progress their careers. The course has close links to the CIOB and students are encouraged to think about the development and progression to chartership.

Entry Requirements

At least 5 GCSEs grades A* - C or 9 - 4 including English and Mathematics, or a Merit profile in a relevant level 2 qualification.

What are the assessment methods?

Some of the units are externally assessed by the awarding body but most of the course is assessed through a series of internally set assignments involving a combination of scenario based tasks linked to project work, practical exercises, timed tasks, individual study and presentations.  Your award can be achieved at a pass, merit or distinction level depending upon your performance in each subject.

How long is the course?

The duration of this Apprenticeship is two years.

What are the progression options?

This course provides the ideal foundation for applying for Higher Education courses, and provides the opportunity for a wide range of careers including Architecture, Building Surveying, Building Control, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Site Engineering, Site Management & Structural Engineering.
