Who is the course for?
The aim of this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to design and deliver a group indoor cycling class. The demand for fitness instructors and personal trainers is increasingly rapidly, and it has the added benefit of being a career that offers the chance to work flexibly to suit your needs.
On completion you will gain an Award in Group Indoor Cycling. You should be at least 18 years old and have an awareness of using a gym together with a passion to teach and instruct within the health and fitness industry.
What does the course involve?
You will learn a variety of exercises and training methods as well as specific teaching and instructing skills on this course. You will become confident in designing a personalised training programme that takes into account the client's physical condition and goals.
The course has theoretical and practical units covering the following areas:
- Group Teaching skills
- Practical Group Cycling Assessments

The course offers you a combination of blended learning which will allow you to work at your own pace and complete practical set assessments and an exam within a supportive teaching and learning environment.
You should be at least 18 years old and have awareness of using a gym, aligned with a passion to teach and instruct within the health and fitness industry. You will also need to have successfully completed the YMCA Level 2 before proceeding onto this course.
The course contains specific theoretical units involving distance learning and self-study so a keen interest and motivation in how the body works and the core skills and knowledge of what is involved in working within the Health and Fitness Industry will be vital.
For all assessment days you will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear to be able to conduct a safe, appropriate and professional gym programme within a working gym environment.
What are the assessment methods?
The course is based on continual and summative assessment. This will consist of:
- Continuous observation of group teaching skills
- Summative observation of group indoor cycling session
How long is the course?
The course will be delivered over two consecutive days (Saturday and Sunday) in which you will be instructed how to deliver a group indoor cycling session using appropriate teaching skills.
What are the progression options?
It is an ideal starting point for those wishing to work as a fitness instructor in the health and leisure industry. The demand for fitness instructors is increasing rapidly and it is a career that offers the chance to work flexibly to suit your needs. On course completion you will gain the Award in Group Indoor Cycling (YMCA Level 2), the entry point to other fitness qualifications such as the Personal Training Level 3 YMCA.
