Who is the course for?

The L3 Diploma in Residential Childcare is specifically designed for learners (adults) who are working in residential care with children, in a caring/support role.  The qualification is designed to build the confidence and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to 19 years.  It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas.

What does the course involve?

The course involves completing mandatory and optional units which cover knowledge and competencies. The knowledge element is completed through assignments, workbooks, questioning and answering, case studies and professional discussion.  The competencies are covered through direct observation, reflective accounts and witness tesitmonies as appropriate within the workplace.

What makes this course special?

This course is delivered in the work setting by a Trainer/Assessor and carries a 61 credit point achievement.  It is the recognised qualification for those working within residential childcare by Ofsted and is a flexible way of recognising and rewarding skills carried out on a daily basis within a work setting.

Placements/Work Placements

There is a requirement that the learner is already employed in the setting as this is a work-based/vocational qualification.

The learner needs to be working within the residential childcare sector.

How long is the course?

15 months – 18 months. There is no requirement to attend College as this is a work-based qualification.

What are the progression options?

Level 4 or Level 5 Childrens and Families Practitioner or Diploma in Residential Childcare.


On completion of the qualification the learner may be able to progress to an enhanced role with their work setting.
