Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for learners aged 18 years and over, who have been working with children in residential children’s homes in England for at least 30 hours a week. It has been recently introduced by Skills for Care and Development. It is an excellent way to gain a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification while working in the residential childcare sector.

  • Level 2 Functional skills in English
  • Level 2 Functional skills in Maths
  • Level 2 Functional skills in ICT
  • Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

What makes this course special?

This is an ideal opportunity for residential staff to study while working. It can be delivered to groups of learners in the workplace, rather than travelling to college premises to study. It is recognised by Ofsted as an appropriate qualification for the residential childcare sector.

Placements/Work Placements

Learners’ own experiences in their place of work are used as evidence towards this qualification, so additional work placements are not usually required.

Entry Requirements

  • Aged 18+
  • Supporting children at least 30 hours a week in a children’s residential home in England

What are the assessment methods?

A variety of methods can be used for gathering evidence towards a QCF portfolio, including assignments, case studies, direct observations, professional discussions, work products and reflective accounts. Exams may be set for Functional Skills English, Maths and ICT parts of the Apprenticeship if relevant.

How long is the course?

Learners can be enrolled for up to two years.

What are the College attendance requirements?

Trainer Assessors visit the workplace on a regular basis to support learners instead of attendance at college-based classes.

Are there any additional costs for the course?

Learners may wish to purchase a textbook to support their learning, but this is not a mandatory cost.

What are the progression options?

On completion, learners may wish to progress to the BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England) (QCF).


Learners can progress into relevant job roles such as Senior Care Worker, Advanced Practitioner in residential childcare, Support Worker, Youth Worker or Registered Manager.
