This course will be delivered online or paper-based over 16 - 20 weeks. Guided learning hours: 135.
Who is the course for?
This qualification will help learners to understand their role in supporting the preferences and needs of individuals in relation to their care or support, the development and implementation of care plans and contributing to the review of these by observing, monitoring and reporting the care activities they’re responsible for.

UNIT 3 - Understanding nutrition and hydration in health and social care settings
- Section 1 Know the principles of a balanced diet
- Section 2 Know the importance of special dietary requirements in health and social care settings
- Section 3 Understand how to plan and promote a balanced diet in health and social care settings
- Section 4 Understand the principles of hydration
- Section 5 Understand the importance of hydration in health and social care settings
- Section 6 Know how to prevent malnutrition
- Section 7 Understand the need to screen and monitor nutrition and hydration
UNIT 4 - Principles of supporting an individual to maintain personal hygiene
- Section 1 Understand the importance of good personal hygiene

- Section 4 Understand when poor hygiene may be an indicator ofother underlying personal issues
UNIT 5 - Understanding continence care
- Section 1 Know the body’s waste functions
- Section 2 Understand the reasons for incontinence
- Section 3 Know the body’s waste functions
- Section 4 Understand how an individual’s choices and preferences affect continence care
- Section 5 Understand the use of various facilities and aids forcontinence care
- Section 6 Know how to deal with body wastes and the abnormalities that might need reporting
- Section 7 Know infection control requirements related to dealing with body waste
UNIT 6 - Principles of supporting sleep
- Section 1 Understand the importance of sleep
- Section 2 Know how to establish conditions suitable for sleep
- Section 3 Know how to assist an individual to sleep
- Section 4 Know how to access information and advice about difficulties with sleep
- Learners must be aged 19 years or over as at 31/08/16
- Must have lived in the EU for the last three years
- Must currently reside in England
- Must have a full Level 2 qualification or above (i.e QCF Diploma Level 2, five GCSEs/O Levels grade A-C, two or three AS Levels, CSE grade 1 5 or more, one A Level, QCF Certificate, GNVQ Intermediate, First Diploma, NVQ Level 2, First Certificate or Principle of Learning Level 2)
- Unemployed and claiming benefits, and using the qualification to obtain work.
*An administration fee will be incurred if you withdraw from the course.
What are the assessment methods?
Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studied.
What are the College attendance requirements?
As a Distance Learning course, there is no need to attend College.
