Who is the course for?

  • This course is designed to prepare you physically and mentally to embark on a military career.
  • This is suitable for students who are in the application process or who are considering applying for a military career through an Armed Forces Careers Office.

What does the course involve?

The course will be a practical and theoretical based course designed to develop military skills and knowledge, including teamwork, leadership, fieldcraft and navigation.  To achieve the Certificate you will study a selection of BTEC units which may include the following:

  • Teamwork & Communication
  • Land Navigation by Map & Compass
  • Improving Health & Fitness in Uniformed Organisation
  • Developing Citizenship through Uniformed Youth Organisation
  • Maintaining Health & Wellbeing in the field
  • Self Reliance in a fieldcraft environment
  • Preparation for expedition
  • Ceremonial Drill & Parade Training

 You will be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications alongside your main course. These will include qualifications in Personal Potential, Functional skills English and Maths, it can also include more specialist awards that are relevant to the subject you are studying which could include first aid.

The course is based on continual assessment with each of the BTEC units. The assessments will vary from individual, group, theory and practical work.

  • This is a course specifically designed for students who enjoy practical activities and are looking for a future in the military.
  • The highly qualified teaching team have over 75 years of experiences with active service, past and present in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force. Completing tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • The course will benefit from using the in-house Activity Centre based at our Cannington Centre for practical sessions as well as local outdoor facilities.

Entry Requirements

  • You need at least five GCSEs in the C - E or 4 - 3 range, with at least one grade C or 4 , or an appropriate Level 1 qualification, together with high levels of motivation and an interest in a military career.

    All learners on the programme are monitored and assessed throughout the course to ensure they achieve as high a level as possible. 

What are the assessment methods?

The course is based on continual assessment with each of the BTEC units being graded. The assessments will vary from individual written work to group presentations and practical assessments. 

How long is the course?

36 weeks September to June or 20 weeks September to January.

What are the College attendance requirements?

  • Students will attend up to five days a week

Are there any additional costs for the course?

  • £1,745 for over – 19 year-olds (financial support may be available depending on individual circumstances)
  • Residential trips and visits are an essential part of this course.

What are the progression options?

  • On successful completion of the course you will have reached the required fitness levels and standards required to pass entry tests for any service.
  • Progression to a Level 3 course at Bridgwater & Taunton College.
