Who is the course for?

For those looking for a professional career in the health and social care sector, Level 3 will suit those already working as a health and social care worker or a senior worker with some responsibilities in the workplace, or wishing to develop and demonstrate skills as part of career development. Candidates will sometimes work without supervision, or want to develop or demonstrate skills, perhaps to become a senior care worker. 

The wide ranging Diploma covers the skills and knowledge needed to work and develop knowledge in a wide range of work-based settings. It is flexible to suit all fields across the health and social care sector. Learners can choose a pathway of learning that suits their role now or for the future.

What does the course involve?

To achieve this Diploma, learners must achieve all nine mandatory units, plus option units from the chosen pathway.

  • Promote communication in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Promote equality and inclusion in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
  • The role of the health and social care worker
  • Promote person-centred approaches in health and social care
  • Promote and implement health and safety in health and social care
  • Promote good practice in handling information in health and social care settings
  • Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children's and young people's settings

The units are assessed in the workplace by a work-based assessor.

What makes this course special?

A Credit-Based System: the QCF (Qualifications Credit Framework) is the new way of recognising skills and qualifications. It does this by awarding credit for units (small steps of learning) and enables learners to gain or add onto new or existing qualifications or can offer a work-based solution to specialised learning.

Learners can choose from three main pathways that reflect their specific area of work in the health and social care sector.

  • Generic pathway
  • Dementia pathway
  • Adults with learning difficulties

Choosing optional units

Optional units within the HSC Diplomas are designed to be combined in flexible ways to reflect the real working context of different learners. When planning the units best suited to an individual learner, all units should be considered by title and content.

Placements/Work Placements

This competency-based qualification is designed to be assessed in the candidate’s workplace as they undertake their normal work role. The evidence must at all times reflect the policies and procedures of the workplace, as informed by current legislation, the relevant codes of conduct and service standards for the sector.

Entry Requirements

An appropriate role in the health and social care sector and initial assessment.

What are the assessment methods?

The majority of assessment will be work-based, using real experiences, written assessments and observations by a qualified assessor.

 Modes of assessment include:

  • Direct observation
  • Oral questioning
  • Case studies
  • Assignments and projects

How long is the course?

The Diploma can be started flexibly, at any time during the year, with an expectation that the learner will complete within 18 months of starting.

What are the College attendance requirements?

Attendance at College is not required as the qualification is delivered within the workplace. Current awarding body guidance is five hours independent study per week.

Are there any additional costs for the course?

In most cases there are no additional costs for this course.

What are the progression options?

It is anticipated that learners will progress to Level 5 qualifications for management or senior practitioner roles in health and social care, or to specialist qualifications reflecting the context in which they work.
