Who is the course for?

This Apprenticeship is for anyone who is working or wants to work as part of the greenkeeping and golf industry and would like to gain this new Level 2 Certificate in Greenkeeping as part of the new Standard Apprenticeship programme.

This programme is designed for anyone who has a keen interest in the greenkeeping and golf industry and prefers combining her/his practical abilities with the development of knowledge and understanding of greenkeeping activities. It provides the perfect opportunity to work in a wide range of environmental situations with links, parkland and heathland golf courses throughout the UK.

What does the course involve?

Working with your employer four days a week with one day a week spent off the job training either at your workplace or at our Cannington site where regular workshop days will be available to make use of the College’s excellent facilities. The course involves completing the updated GTC Training log book and end point assessments to ensure competency in areas such as:

  • Maintaining the health of sports turf
  • Presenting and repairing sports turf
  • Use and maintain equipment and machinery
  • Prepare and operate a tractor and attachments
  • Health and safety

What makes this course special?

This is a new course developed by the Greenkeepers Training Committee in conjunction with employers and the awarding body (City and Guilds).

It brings together many years of experience to ensure those who complete this qualification are fully trained to the latest industry standard.

Cannington Centre’s qualified and experienced staff will work with each learner and employer on an individual basis to ensure the best experience and outcome for all as well as having access to our high quality commercial golf course.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE’s in the A* - E or 9 – 3 range
  • Successful Interview
  • Either hold or have the ability to achieve a D - E in English and Maths GCSE’s (3 - 4) or Level 1 Functional skills
  • Initial assessment may be required in English and Maths

What are the assessment methods?

  • Completion of Greenkeeper Training log book - portfolio
  • Practical assessment
  • Written coursework

Final assessment involving:

  • Multiple choice underpinning knowledge paper
  • Practical assessment at own golf course
  • Personal statement

How long is the course?

18 - 24 months.

What are the College attendance requirements?

  • Technical and practical workshop days, 16 compulsory and 16 optional attendance.
  • English and maths functional skills sessions if required.

What are the progression options?

Apprentices can progress to supervisory level employment within the industry or onto the Sports Turf Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship  and a range of higher level apprenticeships are in the pipeline including Golf Course Manager.

Some advanced apprentices go on study a HNC in Horticulture at our Cannington Centre for Land Based Studies.
