Who is the course for?

This very popular course is for you if you are interested in returning to education but lack confidence because you may not have appropriate qualifications. The Access to HE course is designed to meet your needs by helping you to gain new skills and qualifications. You can use the qualification to gain a place at university or to enhance your career prospects.

What does the course involve?

You choose a diploma and academic subjects suitable for your career aspiration. All our Access Diplomas are made up of three Level 3 units with graded academic subject content and other Level 2 or ungraded Level 3 academic preparation skills units which offer generic, introductory or personal development skills.

On the Science and Engineering Diploma you will therefore choose three of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics.  In addition there will be core components such as study skills and ICT.

Entry Requirements

  • The motivation and a willingness to learn!
  • There are no formal qualifications required for entry but you will undergo an initial assessment and interview to ensure you are on the right course for your skill level
  • This course is for students aged 19 and over

What are the assessment methods?

You will produce a portfolio of work over the year. You gain credits for the assignments you do. You accumulate credits towards the diploma. There are exams in some subjects.

How long is the course?

The course runs from September until June. The precise days and times you will need to attend College will depend on the combination of subjects you decide to study. This will be explained to you and discussed in detail prior to an offer of a place being made.

What are the College attendance requirements?

  • The course requires you to be in College for 2-3 days per week over 30 weeks
  • In addition, self-study hours are necessary to complete the programme

Are there any additional costs for the course?

There are no additional costs.

What are the progression options?

  • You will receive help and advice with the selection of university and college courses available to you, and with your application and interview procedures
  • You will get lots of help in making decisions about your progression routes
  • You can progress onto HE courses here at Bridgwater College including Food Technology and Engineering

Please note: most university courses require GCSE Maths and/or English. There is opportunity to study both alongside your Access programme if you need to.

Destinations

There are lots of specialisms within engineering, so you can progress into an area that really interests you, such as aerospace, automotive, chemical, civil or mechanical engineering.

Awarding Body

Our Access course is validated through Ascentis, which is licensed as an Access Validating Agency by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), and is approved to award the Access to Higher Education Diploma. The Access Diploma to Higher Education is a nationally recognised diploma and enables learners to apply to higher education courses in universities and colleges.
