Who is the course for?

Are you interested in an exciting career in motorsport? Would you like a career in motorsport development and design, track side maintenance, restoration or management of a race team? Do you want to go to university or enter Motorsport employment at technician level?

The IMI Extended Diploma in Motorsport will give you the experience and level of qualification to pursue one of these career routes. It will also appeal to those of you who have a keen interest in the Motorsport Automotive industry and wish to move to a related career or higher education.

The IMI Extended Diploma in Motorsport is an alternative route into university since it combines significant academic achievement with applied and relevant technology subjects. It is an ideal progression route on to the College's own Foundation Degree in Motorsport Engineering with Oxford Brookes University. We now also offer the final year top-up for students to gain a BSc(Hons) in Motorsport Technology.

It allows students to sample the various aspects of motorsport technology and enables them to make a reasoned choice for their future career based on their experience across a range of automotive subjects.

Automotive Workshops

Bridgwater College has excellent automotive facilities in keeping with current industrial practice and has a dedicated workshop, classroom and rolling road facility for Motorsport. These excellent facilities offer students the chance to experience and use the latest industry standard equipment.

Track side learning

Students will be given the opportunity to prepare and support motorsport vehicles at a range of venues and disciplines. Students will prepare vehicles to class regulations, meeting the demands of both the track and driver, displaying their theoretical understanding in a racing environment.

Bridgwater College Motorsport Race Team

Students will be given the opportunity to support the Foundation Degree race team. This will involve playing a key role within the vehicle support team from race car set-up to data recording.

Motorsport Trips and Activities

Project academy evening sessions are designed to encourage Motorsport project activities, working as a team developing an employable skill set. From kit car building, restoration and a student built drift car with re-programmable engine management.

Rolling road dynometer used to measure engine performance, race car improvements and component testing. 

Student run race team with recent successes including winning the Castle Combe Sports and GT Championship 2013 followed with the national OSS championship in 2014. 

A range of race cars such as Radical PR6, Peugeot 205 GTI rally car, Mini Cooper, Yamaha R1 powered Trike, Mazda MX5 drift car, Fiesta hill climb car and two single seat race cars.

Trips previously run include: Barcelona, watching Formula one. Autosport Motorsport show, Prodrive, Morgan and Castle Combe.

Entry Requirements

Minimum of 5 x GCSEs A* – C or 9 – 4, including Maths, English and Science or equivalent qualifications.

What are the assessment methods?

The IMI Extended Diploma in Motorsport is assessed by a range of assignment course work, containing theoretical and practice work with online multiple choice assessments at the end of each unit. 

How long is the course?

One year to achieve a level two Extended Diploma in Motorsport, with an additional year required for level 3.

Overall one year to achieve a full level two, timetabled over three full days a week. One day will be delivered within the dedicated Motorsport workshop then two days based in the classroom. 

What are the progression options?

After successful completion of the level two Extended Diploma in Motorsport you will have the opportunity to progress onto the level three Extended Diploma in Motorsport additional year.

Once you have gained successful completion of The IMI level 3 Extended Diploma in Motorsport and gained a Maths GCSE grade B (minimum), you will have the exciting opportunity to access a Foundation Degree in Motorsport Engineering course, run here at Bridgwater College. You will gain access to a wide range of possible careers and higher education opportunities and develop the transferable skills and key skills that employers now look for.

Students who have completed the Extended diploma in Motorsport have progressed onto the following courses and careers;

BSc(Hons) Motorsport Technology  followed by graduate engineer at Xtrac Engineering.

FdSc Motorsport Engineering followed by Formula 3 employment and then employment at McLaren GT.

Extended Diploma followed with employment at Neil Brown Engines building and supporting engines in British Touring Cars.

FdSc Motorsport Engineering followed with employment at Empire Race Cars.

FdSc Motorsport Engineering followed with employment with Hyundai Motorsport (WRC)

FdSc Motorsport Engineering followed with employment at Radical Performance Engines

MEng Motorsport Engineering with placement and job offer at Bentley Cars.
