Who is the course for?

This course is for learners who have completed a Level 1 Pre-apprenticeship programme or equivalent, or have experience of the motor trade.

What does the course involve?

Topics covered will include:

  • Advanced health and safety
  • Light vehicle
  • Operating principles of petrol and diesel engines
  • Tyres
  • Brakes
  • Steering and suspension
  • Vehicle electrical and electronic systems
  • Simple fault diagnosis

What makes this course special?

This course gives learners the opportunity to gain a recognised trade qualification without the need for full employment, using our excellent modern, fully equipped workshops and classroom facilities. You will also complete a practical project throughout the year which will be exhibited on open days at the College.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have completed the Pre-apprenticeship Programme in Light Vehicle, with merits in all exams. Or experience of the motor trade.

What are the assessment methods?

Learners will be assessed through practical tasks, written assignments and online assessment tests for each unit.

How long is the course?

One year.

What are the progression options?

Students may like to progress onto an apprenticeship programme (subject to initial assessment and suitable employment in a garage), or complete a full time Level 3 Diploma Light Vehicle.
