Who is the course for?

The course is for 16-19 year olds from special and mainstream schools, it is aimed to meet the needs of learners with a wide range of abilities and interests. Learners will be integrated into the different industries within the college studying with students on various levels.

What does the course involve?

Each programme offers a set of practical and theory based units. This gives the students a balanced foundation of knowledge and skills in their specialist area.

This can include:

  • Art and Design
  • Bespoke timetable
  • Catering
  • Employability
  • Health and Social Care
  • Maths and English
  • Multiskills (construction, vehicle maintenance, upcycling and horticulture

Learners enjoy varied practical activities using the college’s industry standard facilities and other outside agencies. This can include small groups, volunteering, fund raising, work experience and educational visits.

Placements/Work Placements

Students will have opportunities to take part in work placements or placements in their chosen area of future study. These could be within the college environment or with external agencies to suit the needs of the learner.

Entry Requirements

No previous qualifications are required just motivation, enthusiasm and the willingness to accept a challenge.

What are the assessment methods?

You will take part in initial assessment to establish your starting point and agree your individual learning targets.

You will build a portfolio of evidence including photographs, videos, practical and written assessments. Staff will also observe you both in lessons and on work experience (where appropriate). You will have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

You will have regular feedback and termly reviews with your personal tutor and other teaching staff.

How long is the course?

This is a one year full time course. In some circumstances there is the possibility of students returning for a second year based on individual need.

What are the College attendance requirements?

You will be expected to attend college for 4 days a week from 9.30am to 3pm. There may be variations based on the requirements of the individual course.

Are there any additional costs for the course?

Course materials, which will include print credit. Costs are kept to a minimum but may include:

  • Clothing (PPE)
  • Trips
  • Art materials
  • Ingredients for cookery
  • Other minimal expenses

You may be eligible for a college bursary to meet the costs of your course, dependent on your household income. Early application is advisable. 

What are the progression options?

On successful completion you may be able to apply for another foundation level programme, L1/ L2 course, supported internship or employment.
