Who is the course for?

This course is for those that like working with timber and creating things with a ‘hands on approach’. It is suitable for students who are looking to earn while they learn and for students who are passionate about choosing wood occupations as a career.

What does the course involve?

The course will:

  • Teach you to become a safe worker
  • Help you to make the most of this wonderful material
  • Develop your hand skills and how to care and use the hand tools of the trade
  • Develop understanding, care and use of power tools
  • Show you the wider techniques of working with timber
  • Give you a greater understanding of the building trades.

Placements/Work Placements

  • Students must be in a trade related employment and cover the relevant carpentry knowledge criteria for the awarding body
  • This will be day release
  • Will have a managing agent
  • Students will have to find their own placement.

Entry Requirements

  • Be employed as a carpenter.
  • Successful interview.
  • Pass the CITB entrance exam.
  • Will need the CSCS apprentice card.

What are the assessment methods?

  • Written examination.
  • Practical assessment.
  • Written coursework.
  • Portfolio.
  • Periodic reviews in both College & the workplace.

How long is the course?

  • Two years.
  • One day per week plus additional time for Functional skills if required.

What are the College attendance requirements?

Six hours a week per year with some self-study time.

Are there any additional costs for the course?

  • Course materials.
  • Clothing.
  • Books.
  • May need to think about buying their own toolkit.
