Who is the course for?
As a team leader/supervisor, you should be in a first line management role, with operational/project responsibilities or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. You will be providing direction, instructions and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever your role.
Key responsibilities are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.
Roles/Occupations may include: Supervisor, Team Leader, Project Officer, Shift Supervisor, Foreperson, and Shift Manager.
What does the course involve?
The CMI Level 3 Diploma in First Line Management (QCF) will cover the knowledge element of the Apprenticeship Standard including the following units:
- Personal development as a first line manager
- Resource planning
- Meeting stakeholder needs
- Managing and communicating information
- Identifying development opportunities
- Improving team performance
What makes this course special?
The course looks at the role of the team leader from building the perfect team through to dealing with difficult behaviour. The team leader's role in inspiring and motivating their team, in ensuring effective communication, in delegating and managing performance and in managing their own personal style to best advantage are all covered.
Learners will leave with a better understanding of how teams work and how effective leaders manage. They will develop their confidence in using the different tools of team leadership and will have analysed their own most effective leadership style and how to flex this when circumstances demand it.
You must be in a relevant team leader/supervisor role within your organisation in order to undertake this apprenticeship so that competence can be assessed using the expected skills, behaviours and knowledge.
The entry requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer, but may typically include five GCSEs at Grade C or higher.
What are the assessment methods?
On-programme assessment will include:
- Regular assessment (involving your employer and Bridgwater & Taunton College)
- Development of a portfolio demonstrating learning and development activities within the workplace
- Evidence of 360-degree feedback within the ongoing development portfolio
- Successful completion of CMI L3 Diploma in First Line Management (QCF) through production of assignments
At the point of ‘gateway readiness’ you will be prepared for End Point Assessment which will include:
- Test of knowledge using scenarios with questions
- Competency-based interview
- Assessment of portfolio evidence
- Professional discussion relating the CPD activity
How long is the course?
What are the College attendance requirements?
There are a range of options depending on cohort size. Anticipated time in the learning environment could be one day every 4-6 weeks. There will be significant study expected to take place in between contact time at the College, supported online and in the workplace.
Are there any additional costs for the course?
There is a possibility that for employers whose learner requires additional ‘End Point Assessment’ attempts there may be additional costs but this can be discussed with your Apprenticeship Recruitment Advisor during initial contact.
What are the progression options?
On completion, apprentices may choose to register as Associate members with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management, to support their professional career development and progression.
You may consider progression to the Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship standard with significant role change.
Successful completion of the apprenticeship will mean you gain:
- An industry designed apprenticeship
- An industry recognised level 3 management diploma
- The option for professional registration with the CMI
