Who is the course for?
This broad-based course is designed to be a first step to a career in agriculture. It provides a good foundation so you can progress on to higher vocational qualifications related to the agricultural industry.
What does the course involve?
This course will give you the opportunity to study a wide range of agricultural topics which can include:
- Undertake Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries
- Environmental and Land-based Business
- Introduction to Farm Animal Production
- Introduction to Land-based Machinery Operations
- Introduction to Animal and Plant Husbandry
- Introduction to Grass and Forage Crop Production
What makes this course special?
The College has its own 200 hectare commercial farm, which you will work on to develop your agricultural skills. During farm duties you will be developing your agricultural skills whilst assisting the farm staff in both the day to day operations as well as involvement with seasonal operations.
During the year you will visit relevant trade shows, commercial farms and attend talks by a range of industry experts.
Students learn using a variety of activities including group work, information gathering from sources outside College, use of periodicals, newspapers, etc, oral presentations and peer group assessment.
During the course you will have the opportunity to undertake at least 150 hours of work experience that will be a mixture of industrial work placements and farm duties at college.
- Minimum of 4 x GCSEs at A* – E or 9 - 3 range, including English or an appropriate level one qualification
- Succesful interview
What are the assessment methods?
Assessment will be by course work which will take the form of written assignments, presentations and practical work. The industry and organisations module is assessed externally.
How long is the course?
One year full time.
What are the College attendance requirements?
You will attend College four days per week, to receive the underpinning knowledge for the practical skills you learn at work.
What are the progression options?
You could progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma, Apprenticeship or into full-time employment.
