Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone who would like to acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding to work in the Land-based industries whilst working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

What does the course involve?

The course involves classroom-based and practical work with 'hands-on' experience in a variety of Land-based industries. You will complete 8 units for the full award. 

Units of study could include:

  • Safe and effective working practices in Land-based industries
  • Use transport and assist with the maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Assist with the care of animals
  • Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals
  • Introduction to crop systems
  • Carry out tractor operations
  • Introduction to wildlife and conservation

What makes this course special?

You will sample a variety of Land-based industries in practical contexts. This gives the opportunity to see if a career in these industries is right for you and helps you choose which area to specialise in. 

You will experience a hands-on approach to learning that will help you to develop your practical skills whilst you develop English, Maths and IT skills which may benefit your future career. 

Placements/Work Placements

Although not an assessed unit, we believe that relevant work experience is important to your understanding and skills development. If you wish to organise a placement it would not only benefit and complement your studies, but also develop the essential communication skills needed for future employment.

Entry Requirements

You need GCSEs in the D to G or 3 to 1 range or other equivalent qualifications. A genuine interest in the Land-based industries and a willingness to learn is vital. You will be invited to attend and interview to assess your suitability for the course.

What are the assessment methods?

Assessment is based on a portfolio of evidence that includes written assignments and practical assessments, and an externally mrked online assessment.

What are the progression options?

On successful completion of the course you may wish to seek employment or progress on to a higher vocational qualification within your chosen industry.
