Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for anyone who wishes to study horse care in the work place rather than attending a full-time College course. The programme will be based in one of our approved training centres, learning in an industry based commercial environment.

To complete the programme, learners will need to secure a place at one of the College's approved training centres. 

What does the course involve?

Learners will study a range of topics that will enable them to work effectively and safely with horses. The topics studied will include assisting with routine stable management, assisting with routine husbandry tasks, safe handling practices, recognition of tack and its use and cleaning, health and safety and developing effective working relationships. Some students may also be given the opportunity to complete ridden units.

What makes this course special?

This is a practical horse based course which will allow learners to experience work in the equine industry whilst training. There are no exams at the end of the programme, all assessment is either coursework or practically based.

Entry Requirements

A range of GCSEs in the D – G or 3 - 1 range or basic skills at entry Level 3. A general interest in working with horses and some practical experience is also required. Entry is also subject to a successful interview at a Bridgwater College approved training centre.

Learners will need to be able to demonstrate knowledge of why they want to work with horses and the enthusiasm to achieve within the industry.

What are the assessment methods?

Learners will be assessed through completion of coursework and practical assessments whilst working on the yard.

How long is the course?

The course is one year in length.

What are the progression options?

Students who successfully attain the Level 1 programme can progress on to the Level 2 programme. Alternatively learners could apply to progress on to a full-time horse management programme at Bridgwater College.
