Construction Skills & Innovation Centre
This new and unique 9-acre Centre in Cannington, enables the College to offer training in excavation, groundworks, concrete pouring and scaffolding; all skills that will be highly sought after if the proposed new power station, Hinkley C, is built.
This facility replicates a real life construction site, with industry-standard plant, machinery and equipment, and enables construction site behaviours and standards to be taught alongside specific technical knowledge and skills.
It also has concrete infrastructures to facilitate bespoke training in steel fixing operations, one of the critical skills for the nuclear new build, enabling steel fixing training to be delivered via large-scale, practical, team-based tasks. Assessment is on-the-job and practical - learners capture ‘live’ evidence by means of helmet-mounted ‘Go-Pro’ cameras as they complete each task.
This facility is enabling the College to develop and deliver the UK’s first accredited qualifications in a number of important disciplines.
