Today was all about the American Civil War, beginning with a brief history overview given to us by Dr. Cloyd at Hinds College.

We then went into the centre of Raymond, where a battle in the Civil War had taken place, and looked at the town’s historic water tower, church and court house, where casualties from both sides had been tended to.

One of the key footholds in the Civil War was the town of Vicksburg, so we journeyed there, stopping on the way to admire the massive Mississippi River from a great viewing spot.

Once in Vicksburg we paid a visit to the Lower Mississippi River Museum, which provided information about the terrible floods the area had seen throughout the years, and where we were able to tour the M/V Mississippi IV, envisaging what life might have been like on board.

Next stop was Vicksburg National Military Park – the battlefield in the Civil War’s siege of Vicksburg. This park was taken in by driving the 16 mile route through the siege’s strategic battle points, stopping along the way to read commemorative signs and plaques and to enter the memorial buildings.

Later on the evening, some staff and students went to the College’s auditorium to see student bands play a variety of music ensembles, including percussion, steel drums, and wind instruments.
