Motorsport gains industry accreditation for HE course - Bridgwater & Taunton College

The Only College in South West England With IMechE & IET Accreditation for Motorsport.

Our IET and IMechE accreditation is now complete and the dust has settled.

But what does it all mean?

Firstly, the IET and IMechE stands for ‘Institution of Engineering and Technology’ and ‘Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ respectively.

Institution of Mechanical Engineers

Bridgwater College and Oxford Brookes University went through a lengthy and intensive accreditation process with these two institutions which took over a year from the start of the process up until the end of the final accreditation panel meeting.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology

These two institutions are licensed by the Engineering Council and can accredit universities and colleges that drive young engineers towards professional accreditation as a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer. The Engineering Council is the UK regulating body for the engineering profession.  Our students will tend to aim for membership/registration with the IMechE due to its close link with motorsport engineering and the automotive industry.

Essentially for us it rubber stamps both the course and the students’ output. For the course, it has been mapped against the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) which describes the standards for professional registration. This also evidences the competences, skills and experience with which graduates leave the course, meaning they are industry-ready when they leave college.

Whilst studying with the us at Bridgwater, students can register as Student Affiliate members which is free and allows them access to a large online engineering library for research, career advice, invites and discounted rates to events and additional training courses, whilst also enabling them to begin the path towards higher levels of membership through tracking their development with the institutions own online ‘Career Developer’ tools.

Once they have graduated they can become associate members until they have completed enough industry experience and additional CPD to be able to apply for Incorporated Engineer status (IEng). The Foundation Degree and BSc(Hons) Top Up that we offer are accredited as ‘partial IEng’, essentially the two halves towards the educational experience required for that level of membership.

To have the course accredited by these two institutions is great for us to have and we are one of only a handful of colleges across the UK to have this accreditation for Motorsport courses and the only institution in the South West of England to have it at all, meaning there really is nowhere else as good as Bridgwater College to study Motorsport in the region.
